The monkey fist keychain
The monkey fist is the paracord rite of passage: three sets of wraps laid around a central ball, then tightened into a perfect sphere. Sailors tied them around cannonballs at the end of heaving lines; makers tie them around marbles and ball bearings at the end of keychains. It is the most patience-demanding knot in the common repertoire and the most satisfying to carry.
Read this first: a monkey fist around a steel ball is a impact weapon in several jurisdictions, and carrying one on a keychain has led to real arrests in the UK, parts of the US and elsewhere. Use a marble, a wooden bead or a rubber ball, check your local rules, and never carry any version you would not show a police officer with a smile. This tutorial is about craft, not hardware.
Materials
One length of 550 cord, 2.5–3 m; a spherical core (marble, 16–20 mm wooden ball, rubber ball); a fid, knitting needle or Phillips screwdriver — the tightening tool that makes this knot possible; scissors and lighter. A gate clip or split ring to finish.
The knot, step by step
First wraps: around your fingers
Wrap the cord four times around three fingers (or a 5 cm dowel): neat, side-by-side wraps, like thread on a spool. Slide them off keeping the coil flat — this is pass one, the "equator" of the sphere.
Second wraps: around the first
Rotate the coil ninety degrees and wrap four turns around the coil itself, perpendicular to the first pass. The new wraps must pass inside the first set on one side and outside on the other — the weave has already begun. Insert the ball into the cage forming in the centre now; it cannot go in later.
Third wraps: the remaining meridian
Rotate ninety degrees again and wrap four turns around the third axis, weaving over and under the existing wraps: each turn alternates, tracing the meridians the first two passes left open. When done, every face of the sphere shows three to four parallel strands crossing at right angles — the monkey fist lattice.
Tighten, pass by pass
This is where the fid earns its place. Work the slack out strand by strand, following each wrap around the sphere and pulling the excess toward the standing end. Tighten the three passes in rotation — a little on each, round and round — so the sphere shrinks evenly onto the ball. Aggressive single-pass tightening collapses the lattice. Expect ten minutes; the marble should barely rattle at the end.
Finish as a keychain
Lock the sphere with a lanyard knot or a cobra-stitched tail (a short lanyard weave makes an excellent handle), add the gate clip, cut, melt, press. A drop of hot glue inside the final wraps before full tightening keeps the ball silent forever.
Troubleshooting
- Gaps in the lattice: under-tightened — back to the fid, one more round of slack-chasing.
- A flat face: one pass has fewer wraps than the others, or the ball sits off-centre. Unpick to pass three and re-wrap.
- Rattling ball: either not tight enough (fid again) or the ball is too small for the wrap count — step up to five wraps per pass or a bigger core.
- Cord runs out mid-tightening: the classic. Next time cut 3 m, or splice an extension early — a splice inside the sphere is invisible.
Beyond keychains
The same sphere, tied at both ends of a handle, makes a hammer grip; tied in Type IV around a golf ball it becomes a dog toy with a tail; tied small in micro cord it is a curtain-pull finial. The monkey fist also teaches the general skill of structured tightening — the same patient slack-chasing that finishes dense braided work and bound tool handles.
